T-Shirt Design

It's been awhile since I updated. I've been practicing drawing people and faces and am getting pretty good. =)

Anyway, I'm in a screen-printing class. It started on Tuesday and we had to come in with a finished design for a one-color print on Thursday. I had no ideas, except that I wanted to draw Steve doing something. I tried thinking for hours after class about what Steve should be doing, had nothing in mind, then slept. Then on Wednesday, I came up with Steve dangling with some opossums, and by the end of the night, I sketched and Photoshopped this composition, with no tree design in mind:


Then today I skipped my Chinese Brush Painting class (this is the only class I will miss: I was tired and didn't want to paint lotuses) and worked from 11-4:30 in Illustrator and managed to make this:


I'm pretty happy with it. My teacher warned me about fine lines, and I tried to make the important ones thick enough. So when I made the screen today, I was surprised when most of the details came through. Even the opossums' fur made it. And it made me happy when a girl in my class asked if she could bring a shirt to class for me to print my design on. =3

Chinese Brush Painting class is going well, and Ning Yeh (my teacher) is awesome. I suck at it for now, but I've gotten much better. Will scan some/photograph it when I have time!

Dinosaloon

I thought I had posted these. Whoops! Here is my Dinosaloon. I had the most fun on this one. My sketchbook is filled with various dinosaur-related props that I wanted to put in but failed at.. I wanted to do a western setting and asked my friend what I should fuse with it and she suggested dinosaurs. I was like OF COURSE. These are the final (top), a very quick value study, and the line work.

Layouts

These are my finalized value studies/layouts for Cliff's class. I wanted to do a nicely rendered version of the forest, but it never happened. The wall could easily be colored. And my triops desert might show up somewhere since I really like it. Wish I could've gotten the flat areas to blend better though.

Pet Psychology Layout

These are color keys to a layout that Cliff gave us. I like the red one best, but was told to go with the dawn one.

These are the finished product. I found out by accident that using red Digital Watercolor in Painter gave the light part of the picture a sunset quality. So I submitted both. =3

Also glad that we did this project first because I found out through printing that the monitor I mainly use is horribly calibrated and looks nothing like other monitors or how it prints out. So now I have my Wacom set to default on my smaller monitor. So this looks good on a Samsung SyncMaster. Too lazy to fix it, but now I have the problem solved for future digital paintings.

These are skies and textures that I did for Cliff's background class. Made with acrylic, some were tweaked with Photoshop. Will upload more later!

Animation is taking its toll on me. Also the spontaneous creativity that we need to bust out for Cliff's background class. So here's something I did as a freshman in uni. I still like it and should probably do technical pen more often.

This was my first project in Illustrator. We had to make a poster for the X-Games. I think it came out pretty well.

I've decided to use this blog as my gallery now, since my website is incomplete and looks like, well, crap.

This semester hasn't been productive in terms of finished pieces yet. But my animation is getting really close to finished, which is great because I won't be stressing out. The hardest part will be the effects, which I am having a tough time with. I made a pretty decent nuclear explosion in flash and a flame cycle last semester and thought LOL I SHOULD DO EFFECTS, but it's been waaay harder than I thought. I bought a book called Elemental Magic, which was recommended by the creator of Bitey's Castle, so we'll see how that goes. I also got both of Walt Stanchfield's books because I suck at life drawing sketches. I can make finished pieces and structures just fine, but drawing while things are moving or even just nice-looking gestures while holding still seems to have always been a problem for me.

Over the summer if I don't get an internship, I'm going to take some art classes at Coastline Community College. They have two brush painting classes, which I'd love to take because I need to learn to paint with SOMEthing. There's a life drawing class that I'll definitely be taking even if it is a beginning one. My goal this summer is to get life drawing down and hopefully this teacher will be able to help me. They also have an airbrushing course, which could be fun, but I'm still iffy on that.

For a class that I'll actually get credit for, I'll be taking the Art History course that spans from 1500s to the present.

Okay yeah this was a long post. So here's a bunch of pictures I've done before this semester.

I sent this to the Prismacolor contest. I entered it last year but it didn't win. Lawrence urged me to try again though.

Yes, I'm procrastinating. I even cleaned out my fish tank in delay of doing work. I had the motivation awhile ago, but it appears to have left me. I hope it comes back.

Yup, I did forget!

I figure I might as well slowly add stuff here until I get off my ass to scan in my new shit. That's why digital's so great: it's right on the compy and you don't need to scan and color correct.

This is a very stressful semester, but I'm getting so much knowledge from four of my classes. In my Pictorial Background class, I'm learning to paint with acrylic. FINALLY. I first used acrylic senior year in high school, and, while I loved my teacher, he didn't teach me how to use it. Allie showed me how to water it down to use it like watercolors, but that was as far as I got. And I think I had the worst teacher for Beginning Painting. Acrylic is hard, but I think I'm picking it up quickly.

Next class is Life Drawing B, where we paint from life using oils. Oils are a bitch to work with, but I hope I can conquer them by the end of the semester. Basically I just want to learn to paint because those are the illustrations that get bought. =3

Then there's Animation B, which I'm making an animation with my little dragon/raptor/t-rex/lizard in it. His name is Steve. I'd post a picture of the turnaround, but as I was animating him, I realized it was better to give him a bigger head. So he's actually more proportionally closer to my first turnaround sheet in Intro to Animation.

I also have Intro to Dance. How does this help? Well, I get to exercise a bit each week and understand movement more. It's fun and there's no real homework.

The other class that I don't find useful is Renaissance Art. I guess I love looking at art and recognizing styles of artists, but I fail to see the importance of MEMORIZING the date, medium, location and building. I'm better at learning facts if I can apply it to something outside of class, but I fail to see how that's possible with Art History. =\

I'll try and keep the zero people who read this updated with any new stuff I have, but for now I'll try and upload some stuff here and get a DECENT website.

Obligatory First Post

Yeah, so this is my art blag. This is the most recent finished piece I've made for my Digital Illustration course. We had to create our own interpretation of a Shel Silverstein poem. Considering I've never digitally colored anything that didn't look like some shitty deviantArt entry, I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I will probably forget about this blag in a month. Oh, well.
